Vegan Bake Sale for Haiti – SUCCESS!

Haiti Cupcakes, made by Nicole and Sarah. Photo – fughawzi
Well kids, I’m overwhelmed. We had so many tables full of great vegan baked goods, and every time something would disappear, a new baker would appear with something new to take its place! The crowd was huge and never lulled, and we even had a couple of celebrity customers. (Sandra Oh was our first!)
Our final count, which does not include Locali or C’est La V’s generous contributions, comes to:
Drumroll, please…
$3285.43 (Total includes two extremely generous donations.)
!!!
I want to thank everyone that participated, that either baked, bought, or even just hung out. You all rock my socks. Special thanks to Afsoon, Adam at Baked LA, Bunny Muffin Bakery, Erica, Beth, Meghan and everyone’s favorite Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm Flailing Tube Man – Lawrence.

He works hard for the money. So hard for the money.

Vegan Bake Sale for Haiti
Isa over at The PPK slapped up an idea for a PDX bake sale for emergency aid to Haiti earthquake victims, so I thought maybe LA would like to show PDX that just because they’re the Vegan Hippie Mecca and we’re famously A Bunch of Jerks doesn’t mean that we can’t compassion the fuck out of Haiti too.

So far, we need a venue and more people to bake stuff. My coworker and I are sort of looking locally, in the NoHo area, but all suggestions will be considered.
PPK post, which will probably interest the bake-y types.
Quarrygirl post, which might be more for the planning types.

Some coworkers put in an order to Healthyca yesterday and I couldn’t resist, as I had never tried anything there before. It’s a shame that this place is essentially only open for the office lunch crowd, as I live close by and it would be a nice weekend place to pick up food. Oh well…

Tofu trio (teriyaki, tomato and ginger olive) on a bed of red cabbage, plus two sides (grilled white asparagus and red smashed potatoes.) $9.95
This was a ton of food!
I had never tried white asparagus before, but it was really sweet and tasty. I think it might have been grilled with some balsamic vinegar. The red smashed potatoes were really creamy and good, and even though I never have to season anything I order, I did have to add a little salt and pepper. Still good.
The tofu was really quite good, kinda oily… and I gotta tell you, but the three flavors were not distinct. That’s ok, because the Captain Planet flavor that the tofu flavors combined was tasty. It didn’t kick my ass, but it definitely satisfied.
Chickpea Noodle Soup
I’m not even halfway through my first bowl of this soup, but if I don’t update now, I won’t update for a while because I’m a little under the weather right now. It was almost worth getting sick to make this awesomepants soup.

I made this with chickpea miso and brown rice spaghetti, as that’s what I had on hand. Wonderful. Make this for everyone you know, RIGHT THIS MINUTE.
Laptop battery’s dying, smell you later!

No commentsThe Frankenstand!
I’ve been wanting to try The Frankenstand for months, ever since seeing reports on quarrygirl. On Sunday, my spooky vegan hot dog dream came true at Madex’s GuerrillLA Drive In.

The Franken - Image courtesy of quarrygirl.com (it was too dark for me to take good pics of my own)
(I take mine with Vegenaise, BBQ sauce, yellow mustard, relish and onions, if you’re curious.)
I honestly don’t know how Raymond, the spooky owner of this spooky stand, makes Tofurkey franks taste so good, but bless his spooky little heart for figuring it out.
The Menu:

Me and my two omni companions all had Frankens, and boy howdy, were they delicious! Raymond is a super nice guy and he carries Pomegranate Hansen’s soda (always a plus!)
As for the movie, it was The Muppets’ Christmas Carol, and the drive in is a parking lot in Downtown LA – the movie is projected from a truck on to a white wall. There’s an amp that projects the sound (not blaringly so, it had to be turned up with a group of loud guys were passing by) and they use an unused FM station to broadcast the audio signal if you’re a coward and don’t want to hang outside of your car. It was cold, it was fun, and it was delicious. I see a regular activity in my future, and I can only hope that Frankenstand is there every month. Spoilers: Next month’s movie is Repo Man!

Red sauce, roasted garlic sauce, Daiya cheese, capers, tomatoes, artichoke hearts and basil. Yum!
I walked in to pick up this lunch pizza, and finally got to meet the owner – who recognized me from my orders and thanked me for all of my business. She was super cool, I love when places have great service along with a great product.
As for the pizza, I think the Tuscan has a rival. A big time rival.
I never thought I could love a pizza with red sauce, but I was so wrong. Baby, take me back. I can change! The garlic sauce on the red sauce mixed with the creaminess of the melted Daiya is pure heaven. I never would have thought to add capers to a pizza, but they’re an amazing addition.
THIS. IS. SO. GOOD.

No commentsS’mores and Pomegranate Ginger Cupcakes
I haven’t really been cooking lately because I haven’t been eating so much, thanks to the medication I’m on. However, I did make some cupcakes for an event last week.

S’mores, from Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World

Pomegranate Ginger, from My Sweet Vegan
It’s too hot for me to update with any substance, sorry. The S’mores cupcakes are basically graham cracker cupcakes with chocolate ganache, vanilla buttercream, and shaved chocolate and a graham cracker garnish. The Pomegranate Ginger are a cake of pomegranate and crystallized ginger, with a drizzled pomegranate glaze and ginger buttercream.
